Attitude Toward Foreign People and Fear of Crime: A Case Study of Yeongdeungpo-gu, Seoul, Korea

Abstract

These days, in South Korea society, minorities who came from foreign country for making money become a new social problem. This is because, even though a few of those foreign people commit crimes, the criminal acts always are broadcasted and issued very severally. Under these circumstances, the current study aims at finding whether peoples’ attitude toward foreign people affects their fear of crime. The topic was examined using the 2010 Seoul Survey data executed by The Seoul Metropolitan Government. From this data, 1,884 people are selected whose dwelling place located in the Yeongdeungpo-gu where the top late residential area to foreign people in Seoul, S. Korea. The findings show the residents who have favorable Attitude toward Foreign People are less likely to feel fear of crime victimization, this result satisfies the hypothesis. Whereas the people who more participates local club and trust local government are more likely to perceive fear of crime victimization, these results counter previous research and research hypothesis.
