While the number of female correction executives is small, those moving up the ranks in this highly male-dominated field continue to grow. To date, most research on women correction executives is anecdotal. The present study, conducted in 2015, with assistance from the Association of Women Executives in Corrections (AWEC), is based on quantitative and qualitative data from questionnaires and 1:1 interviews. This portion of the larger research project explores women’s motivations for entering the field of corrections and their decision to seek promotion within the executive ranks.
