Multicultural Education? Exploring Criminal Justice Educational Experiences among Minority Students

Abstract

Despite the increasing diversity of undergraduate college students, criminal justice programs tend to be male operated programs in predominately white institutions. In addition, research indicates that female students have been victims of sexist stereotypes, while African American students report discrimination and racial insensitivities in the classroom. Given the constant demand to continually improve, meet expectations, and recruit and retain motivated undergraduates, it is imperative that both faculty and program directors uncover, understand and remedy these and other student concerns. The primary focus of this study was to explore criminal justice educational experiences between white and non-white students. Gender differences, transfer status, age, future career goals and comparisons with other majors were also addressed. Results indicated different academic experiences for both minority and female students, when compared to their white male counterparts.
