Social Bonds, Cognitive Schemas, and Police Deviance: Does the Relative Importance of Specific Bonds Matter in Explaining Police Supervisors’ Workplace Misconduct?

Abstract

Recent research indicates that social bonds, measured as the total number of consequences listed to a police deviance scenario, reduce the likelihood of police misconduct. However, the research does not address whether certain types of social bonds (e.g., personal vs. professional) have more impact than others. Using data from a multi-agency sample of police supervisors and relying on cognitive schema theory, this study will examine the nature of the bonds that have the greatest impact on reducing the likelihood of police misconduct.
