Visual Representations in Crime Films: Methodological Considerations

Thu, Nov 17, 11:00am to 12:20pm, Hilton, Eglinton Winton, 2nd Level

Abstract

Criminology has changed in many significant ways over the past 10 years or so. An earlier interest in media criminology morphed into an interest in cultural criminology, complete with a journal outlet: Crime Media Culture. Even more recently, scholarly articles and books have made the case for the importance of an analysis of visual representations in criminology. As we move into this new area of inquiry, it seems that the time is right for a consideration of methodological issues surrounding the analysis of visual representations. More specifically, how do we select the visual images that we intend to analyze, and how do we then analyze them? In this paper, we will consider an analysis of visual images in criminology from a methodological perspective.
