The advent of new ride sharing companies such as Uber, Lyft, and Sidecar has brought about a new concern for driver safety. Many taxis/cabs have bulletproof glass separating the driver from the passengers but these new companies promote friendliness and building a relationship with passengers. Riders are encouraged to sit in the front seat for a more sociable ride. This can cause some concerns for drivers in which their safety could be in jeopardy with this welcoming approach. These drivers are using their own vehicles and must rely on phone apps and email for communication with the companies. There is no company dispatcher that can be alerted when there is trouble. The question becomes, how can ride sharing drivers keep themselves safe and what do they, or should they, expect from the company from which they contract their work?
