Procedural Justice and Criminal Offending: A Longitudinal Assessment of Direct and Mediating Effects

Abstract

Many process-based model researchers argue that legitimacy and legal cynicism partially mediate the relationship between procedural justice and law-abiding behaviors. This process is usually tested between individuals, often times using cross-sectional data. However, legal socialization theory posits too that this process should be observed within-individuals over time. This current study uses longitudinal data from serious adolescent offenders to estimate multi-level growth curve models to examine both between-individual and within-individual mediation effects. Implications for theory and future research will be discussed.
