The Techniques of Neutralization and College-Related Violence

Abstract

The proposed research study will test Sykes and Matza’s (1957) techniques of neutralization theory. Specifically, the research will investigate the degree to which university students may utilize one or more of the techniques of neutralization to justify their attitudes regarding typical college-related violence (i.e., general assault, sexual assault, and dating violence). The sample for the study will be comprised of students enrolled at a four-year university. The proposed study will be unique in that it will employ a factorial survey that includes scenario-type questions. Various scenario-type questions will provide insights into the degree to which a participant may or may not use the techniques of neutralization to justify their attitudes about typical college violence. The potential findings of the study will be discussed in light of possible implications for criminological theory, research, and policy.
