The virtual reality (VR) revolution is beginning now. With the release of the consumer Oculus Rift in March 2016, it is easier than ever to create immersive educational experiences for students using VR. Despite the fact that it was initially designed for gaming applications, VR is increasingly common in other markets--including education. Criminal justice education in particular stands to benefit greatly from this technology. Police officers, first responders, social workers, probation officers, lawyers, and other related personnel engage in tense social situations. Our students are often tasked with understanding these complex social situations by simply reading a textbook. While not a panacea, VR is an excellent tool for engaging students in practical education. This presentation serves three purposes. First, a brief introduction to current VR technology will be presented. Second, a few case studies of VR integration (primarily through Google Cardboard and the Oculus Rift devices) in criminal justice classrooms will showcase ideas, successes, and challenges. Third, additional resources, costs, and hurdles will be provided to help you get started.
