Wed, Nov 16, 2:00 to 3:20pm, Hilton, Prince of Wales, 2nd Level

Abstract

Job satisfaction is important for both the employee and organization. Absence of job satisfaction may result in low organizational commitment, poor job performance, absenteeism, and high employee turnover. This is particularly true for police organizations keeping in view the type of problems police personnel face- long hours, unpredictable nature of work, and physical dangers.

Theories of motivation and job satisfaction can broadly be divided into two streams of content theories and process theories. These theories have been applied in the context of police organizations, providing insight into organizational dynamics. On the basis of a survey done among 500 police personnel, this paper attempts to understand the applicability of these theories and explain the multidimensional factors impacting job satisfaction among police personnel in India. This study draws on content theory, and examines the impact of demographic factors and work environment on job satisfaction.
