Thinking Theoretically About Image-Based Sexual Abuse: The Contribution of Male Peer Support

Abstract

Often referred to as "revenge porn," "non-consensual pornography," or involuntary pornography," image-based sexual abuse is a now recognized by social scientists, policy makers, and criminal justice officials as a major social problem. There is a rapidly growing body of research on this topic, but theoretical developments have thus far not kept pace with the burgeoning empirical literature. Thus, the main objective of this paper is to offer a new theoretical model, one that emphasizes the contribution of patriarchal male peer support.
