Red Light Camera Interventions for Reducing Traffic Violations and Accidents: A Systematic Review

Wed, Nov 16, 12:30 to 1:50pm, Hilton, Grand Salon 4, 1st Level

Abstract

This study is a systematic review of the literature on the use of red light camera interventions for reducing traffic violations and accidents. The review focuses on studies that have used rigorous methodology, specifically randomized controlled trials, after-only quasi-random allocation, and/or before/after quasi-random allocation. The objective is to systematically evaluate all the relevant research on the effect of red light cameras on the incidence of red light violations as well as the incidence and severity of road crashes and casualties. The underlying goal of this research is to establish whether there is any link between red light camera interventions and public safety and traffic law adherence. It is anticipated that this research will inform public policy surrounding this issue.
