Evidence Based Policing (EBP) – Moving Beyond the Rhetoric?

Abstract

What does it take for a police organisation to be evidence based? How do police organisations move from the rhetoric of using evidence to guide practice to inculcating this into the very DNA of the police organisation? This address will discuss the paucity of research that is available to police organisations and identify strategies to ‘fast track’ the research agenda applicable to policing. Enshrining Evidence Based Policing (EBP) into every facet of the police agency is much easier said than done. Through the provision of dedicated funding, strong and effective strategic leadership, training and mentoring the next generation of officers with an understanding of and commitment to science – police agencies have a greater chance of becoming truly evidenced based. This address will also highlight the Society of Evidence Based Policing (SEBP) as an enabling platform in this change process.
