Life and Death in the Big Easy: Homicide and Lethality in Twenty-First-Century New Orleans

Fri, Nov 18, 8:00 to 9:20am, Hilton, Grand Ballroom C, 1st Level

Abstract

This paper reports that New Orleans’ homicide problem is linked to an unusually high lethality rate that has characterized the city for at least the past two decades. We suggest that the city should focus on three things to reduce lethality: (1) gun use in assaults and robber¬ies, (2) the disorganization of the illegal drug trade, and (3) the pro¬vision of emergency medical services for violent crime victims.
