While interpersonal violence such as retaliatory homicide is the type of violence most people think of, I argue that structural and institu¬tional forms of violence, which are accomplished through policies and laws that are enforced informally and formally and that serve to reinforce the hierarchical order of society, affecting both the ex¬tension and denial of civil and basic human rights of individuals, must be addressed in order to realize long-term reductions in lethal violence.
