Internal Procedural Justice and Trust in Citizens: An Analysis of Police Officers in Taiwan

Abstract

While Tyler’s procedural justice model of policing has been widely used to assess public perceptions of police legitimacy and willingness to cooperate with the police, little is known about how the model may be applied to police officers. Using survey data collected from 500 police officers in Taiwan, this study tests how internal procedural justice, measured in terms of neutrality, respect, voice, and accountability, may affect police officers’ trust in the citizenry. Findings of this study will enhance our understanding about police occupational attitudes in general and shed light on the applicability of the procedural justice model within police agencies in particular.
