From Dating Violence to Adult Intimate Partner Violence: Continuity and Sources of Resilience in Adulthood

Abstract

Previous literature has found continuity over the life course for intimate partner violence, but little research has explored continuity between early dating violence and adult IPV or whether protective factors may attenuate this relationship. This research will attempt to expand on prior literature by using longitudinal data from the Rochester Youth Development Study to explore continuity from dating violence to adulthood IPV and whether direct and buffering protective factors may interrupt this relationship. We hypothesize a positive relationship between dating violence in early adulthood and later adulthood IPV and that support and attachment will provide buffering and direct protection for this relationship. Theoretical and policy implications will be discussed.
