Criminogenic Places: The Role of Automated Public Toilets and Crime

Abstract

Considerable resources are spent on providing publicly available washrooms accessible on walkways and sidewalks. These automated public toilets (APTs), features commonly attributed to European cities, have become increasingly common in North America over the last decade. While media portrayals of crime around APTs have varied, APTs are portrayed as areas conducive to crime in Seattle and San Francisco though not crime conducive in Portland. This study analyzed the impact of APTs on street crime in Vancouver, British Columbia, and was aided by the use of ArcGIS.
