Child Migrants to the U.S.: An Understanding of the Other Side

Fri, Nov 18, 11:00am to 12:20pm, Hilton, Canal, 3rd Level

Abstract

The purpose of this exploratory study is to identify Central American communities that are forcing child migration to the U.S., assess the prevalence of family violence within those communities, and explore the correlation between family violence and child migration. This study is addressing questions such as which communities, regions, or ‘barrios’ are forcing their children to migrate? What are the ‘hot spots’ of child migration? What are the living conditions on these communities that force their children to migrate? Are those rural or urban communities? What types of family structure they have? How prevalent is domestic violence and child abuse in those communities?
