Profiles of Deportability in Spain: Analyzing the Policies of Migration Control from a Feminist and Post-colonial Perspective

Abstract

From the onset of the current refugee crisis the Spanish policies of migration control have not experienced any important shift. Thus, analyzing who has been deported from Spain over the last decade or so give us an insightful viewpoint about the operation of the Spanish devices of migration control with regard to asylum-seekers and refugees. Specifically, the analysis of the empirical data regarding the detention and deportation of migrant individuals form a feminist and post-colonial perspective provides valuable information on the demographic profile of the individuals actually prosecuted and sheds light on the rationale of the whole apparatus of migration control.
On the one side, the analysis of the existing data on detention and deportation of migrants taking into account the theoretical frameworks of feminist literature regarding both the gender-based differential use of public space and the relation between women and crime is particularly revealing of the actual selectivity of the deportation regime. On the other side, the paper takes into consideration the nationalities of individuals affected by the cycle of deportation in order to grasp the actual persistence of post-colonial relations of power within current policies of migration control.
