The ‘Refugee Crisis’ in Europe

Abstract

Mass migration of ‘unwanted’ people always causes fears of criminality, infectious diseases, huge growth of population, cultural clashes. Such fears emerge again at political and societal levels in the EU, including fears of organized crime expanding its networks, human smuggling, arrival of war criminal and jihadists to Europe. There are fears of political and ethnic conflict in the refugees’ countries of origin which they might fight in destination countries. One of the biggest issue is that the existing security measures are not able to control the large numbers of newcomers.
Based on on-going research in the EU, this presentation will shows how these fears shape social reactions and influence social behavior of the actors directly and indirectly involved in the ‘refugee crisis’.
