An Overview of the Training Pilot

• In Event: Can Training Improve Stop and Search Practice? Evaluating a Training Pilot RCT in England and Wales

Abstract

This presentation will provide an overview of the training pilot, including the intervention logic, the structure and timeline of the pilot, and the structure of the methodologies used in both the process and impact evaluation activities. The presentation will also examine the recent history of stop and search powers in the UK, as the pilot needs to be understood within its broader political and organizational contexts, where stop and search has been a contested issue, and officers involved in the pilot were keenly aware of the underlying politics of the reform efforts. The presentation closes with brief considerations on the potential relevance of the pilot for police in other contexts such as the US, both in terms of parallels with similar practices such as stop and frisk, as well as in terms of evaluating police training more generally.
