This paper tracks the birth and growth of the UK, Australia, New Zealand, US and Canadian Societies of Evidence Based Policing (SEBP). SEBPs are practitioner-led societies that seek to advance the capacities of police agencies around the world to access the existing scientific evidence, adopt evidence based policies and procedures, and conduct their own evaluations (sometimes under randomized field trial conditions, and other times not) in order to improve the effectiveness (and efficiency) of policing. The paper discusses the experiences of these SEBPs, identifying the challenges along the evidence based policing journey.
