Structural and Organizational Sources of Financial Distress in Police Agencies

Abstract

In late 2008, the United States economy suffered a major recession. While much attention has been paid to the effects of the recession on the broader economy, and at the individual-level, little research has examined how the recession created financial distress for public service organizations such as police agencies. Using data from a variety of sources, we examine how economic and organizational variables may influence financial distress at the agency level. We present results from our analysis and discuss the implications of our findings.
