Explaining Crime Clearance Through Routine Activities Theory and Departmental Variation: A Hierarchical and Longitudinal Approach

Abstract

The present research examines crime clearance using NIBRS data to determine if components of Routine Activities Theory can be used to explain the likelihood of crime clearance. Data is examined over several years to see if any observed relationships are time-specific. Moreover, a comparison of logistic and multiple forms of hierarchical logistic regression are compared for explanatory benefit. Of specific interest is are time-dependent racial/ethnic effects at the individual (e.g. incident) level.
