Cyber-Bullying Victimization and Cyber Routine Activities Theory: A Qualitative Approach to Prevention

Abstract

Cyber-bullying victimization among youths has become a serious issue in society through the advancement of technology and social networking sites. The purpose of this study is to apply Cyber Routine Activities Theory (2008) as the main theoretical framework to examine cyber-bullying victimization and offer its effective preventive measures against cyber-bullying activities among youths. Other theoretical perspectives, such as social learning theory, will also be discussed as prominent themes in the data collected. Qualitative data were gathered via interviews with parents, teachers, and school administrative personnel to examine their influence on cyber-bullying. The results suggest adequate online lifestyle and digital guardians can minimize cyber-bullying victimization. More importantly, parents, teachers, and school administrative personnel can substantially influence cyber-bullying behaviors among youths.
