Contemporary Juvenile Justice Policy and Practice: Australia, England and Wales

Wed, Nov 16, 8:00 to 9:20am, Hilton, Grand Salon 16, 1st Level

Abstract

Analysis of the sweep of juvenile justice policy in the last decade in Australia and England and Wales reveals fundamental tensions between attempts at diversion and rehabilitation on the one hand, and punitive practices that entrench the contexts that lead to offending behaviours. This paper will introduce the Comparative Youth Penality Project and will explore some key policy and practice themes in juvenile justice policy as it moves back and forth along the spectrum between welfare and punitiveness.
