College-aged Young Peoples’ Opinions and Perceptions about the Legalization of Medical Cannabis

Abstract

Research has shown public opinion to be a significant player in the establishment and reformation of policy. This study explores the opinions about cannabis decriminalization and legalization as well as perceptions of the harms and risks that cannabis (and other drugs) poses. We surveyed college aged young people, as the daily use of cannabis is the highest among this group and thus the legalization of marijuana has important potential implications for this age group. The objective of our research is to identify what this age group does and does not know about the possible links between cannabis (and other drug use) on health and risk-taking behavior; in addition to their views on the liberalization of drug policy. We present some preliminary results from an online survey administered via qualtrics, to college aged young people in Monroe county, New York.
