No Place Like Home: The Divergent Effects of Lifecourse Transitions by for Young Adults with and without a Physical Disability

Abstract

Lifecourse transitions (completing college, moving away from home, marriage, etc.) are often associated with decreased levels of criminal victimization, but does this hold true for all groups? This study examines how the effect of lifecourse transitions differs for young adults with a physical impairment compared to their non-disabled peers. Results show that for the non-disabled, transitions decrease the risk of violent victimization. However, transitions rarely have a significant effect for the disabled and may in fact increase the odds of victimization.
