Active Shooters: A Typology and Process

Abstract

This presentation offers dissertation research about active shooters from 1966-2012. Using the NYPD and Stanford Geospatial Center databases, the study used qualitative methods to identify emergent patterns and themes to create a typology and process for active shooters. The study utilized Bronfenbrenner's theory of ecological systems to evaluate and organize biographical and chronological information about the shooters and the environments in which they developed. It will present similarities and differences for multiple types and subtypes of shooters and examine the frequency and traits of each.
