Examining the Role of Biological Sex, Exposure to Violence, and Neighborhood Context on Adolescent Suicidal Behavior

Abstract

Prior research indicates that males are more likely to complete suicide, but suicide attempts and suicidal ideation are more common among females. Although suicidal behavior has been shown to vary across gender, less is known about how gender differences in suicidal behavior operate across various contexts such as neighborhoods or schools. The present study uses a nationally representative sample of adolescents to examine how the relationship between biological sex and suicidal behavior (suicide attempts and suicidal ideation) varies across neighborhood context. Additionally, this study examines the role exposure to violence plays in the relationship between biological sex and suicidal behavior across neighborhoods.
