BDSM is considered an alternative sexuality under the umbrella of heteronormative sexual standards. While BDSM roots itself in principles of safety, trust and vulnerability, the heteronormative community deems it unacceptable and deviant. This paper will engage in a discussion of heteronormativity, the principles of BDSM, exploring abuse and mainstream exposure of BDSM through media. A discussion of labeling theory engages heteronormative standards of understanding deviancy and alternative sexualities as interchangeable. This paper engages with discussions of alternative sexualities and encourages open and inclusive considerations of sexuality.
