Demography and Kernel Density Estimation of Theft in Downtown Houston

Thu, Nov 17, 11:00am to 12:20pm, Hilton, Grand Salon 18, 1st Level

Abstract

The downtown area of Houston is a center of arts and pop cultures hosted within a museum district and numerous events centers. This study examines the temporal influence of demographic variables on the concentration of theft incidents in this central city area of Houston. Kernel Density Estimation techniques are utilized to spread risk estimates of theft across the study area. The study hopes to identify, extrapolate and assemble crime patterns and spatial risks estimates that could be usefully applied by the police for the management of event seasons such as the Super Bowl in Downtown Houston.
