Police Chiefs’ Assessments of Leadership

Abstract

Recent scholarship has highlighted the contingent nature of how police chiefs view the most important elements of leadership. This study uses survey data from police chiefs to explore their perceptions of the most crucial elements of effective leadership. Additionally, we describe the traits and behaviors highlighted by chiefs as being the greatest impediments to good leadership.
