A Mixed-Method Analysis of International Terrorism Support Within the United States.

Abstract

This paper will explore how individuals in the United States provide support for Foreign Terrorist Organizations (FTOs). Using court case data, this mixed methods content/narrative analysis will contribute to the criminological literature by focusing on a rare-event crime from a unique data source. The qualitatively rich court transcripts and supplement documents not only provide demographic information on the alleged perpetrators, but narrative data via social media and other online outlets that can offer insight to the motivations and aspirations of potential FTO supporters. Trends in the data (since September 2001) will be analyzed with the goal to provide insight to the current threat facing our country from those on the inside.
