Schools are continuing to implement prison-like practices in an effort to improve safety, resulting in the use of many restrictive security practices and procedures. Using a large nationally representative sample of schools, we seek to answer three research questions: (1) What do the trends of school security practices look like over the past two decades?; (2) How effective are these practices in the prevention of school crime and violence?; and (3) What are the unintended consequences of these school security practices?
