Title IX and Sexual Violence: The Current State of Title IX and Sexual Violence on College Campuses

Wed, Nov 16, 2:00 to 3:20pm, Hilton, Canal, 3rd Level

Abstract

Title IX of the 1972 Education Amendments requires schools to take active steps toward eliminating sex based discrimination. Until recently, Title IX was most closely associated with school athletics. Recently Title IX has been invoked as a means to address sexual violence on college campuses. As of July 2015, 124 colleges and universities were under federal investigation for alleged violations of Title IX (Kingkade, 2015). This paper will examine how Title IX is used to ensure that colleges and universities properly address sexual violence, provide an overview of the current state of Title IX investigations, and examine best practices.
