Attributions of culpability in teacher and student relationships: Does gender and/or sexual orientation matter?

Abstract

Research suggests that the media portrays students and teachers involved in sexual relationships differently by age, attractiveness, and gender, causing some to be villainized while others are idolized. However, research has not thoroughly explored how characteristics of teachers and students may interact to influence perceptions of culpability and blameworthiness. Using a self-administered survey, participants included undergraduate students who were randomly assigned to vignettes where demographic and situational characteristics of the teacher, student, and relationship varied. Participants were asked questions regarding their perceptions of several aspects of both the student and teacher’s involvement and culpability.
