How Do Police Officers Really Feel About Police Body Worn Cameras?

Abstract

Body-worn cameras are a fairly new technology that have been implemented as an accountability mechanism for both police officers and community members. However, despite the growing implementation of this technology, the research on body-worn cameras is underdeveloped. This research seeks to uncover the perceptions of police officers in terms of their receptiveness towards and satisfaction with body-worn cameras. In order to do this, a multi-staged quasi and randomized experimental design was utilized to assess officer perceptions of BWCs both before and after implementation in comparison to officers who did not receive BWCs. A number of police officers were surveyed prior to the implementation of cameras and after the implementation of these cameras in order to assess pre- and post- outcome measures. Moreover, this research will offer a preliminary analysis of the impact of using body-worn cameras by police officers on their job performance.
