Abstract

This presentation will present current program activities and successes with youth leadership to build communities and prevent violence in post-Katrina New Orleans including an innovative arts program and policy and practice recommendations. Mustafa is a native New Orleanian and grounded in the city’s social justice community. She serves as Program Associate for AFSC New Orleans and Organizer for Peace by Piece. With PxP, she is committed to supporting and mobilizing Black youth and young adults to establish sustainable, autonomous and equitable communities. She is also the co-founder and Core Organizer of New Orleans Palestinian Solidarity Committee. NOPSC is dedicated to the struggle for the liberation of Palestinians in Palestine and the diaspora. While the efforts of NOPSC are based in the Greater New Orleans area, Tabitha’s work has taken her across the globe. She has worked with the Spanish Ministry of Education, US public defender offices, nonprofits, and universities, including her alma mater, Tulane. Mustafa’s primary grassroots organizing efforts and projects have been in criminal justice, immigrant rights, youth development and food justice. Her work has been featured in media outlets including Refinery 29, The Times-Picayune, Real News Network, The Louisiana Weekly, and AFSC’s Acting in Faith blog.
