The Police and Victims of Intimate Partner Abuse: Experiences and Satisfaction

Abstract

Intimate partner abuse (IPA) has been and continues to be a serious criminal and social problem. Presenting data using face-to-face interviews with victims of intimate partner abuse who have had police contact regarding IPA they have experienced, the purpose of this study is to examine these victims and their satisfaction with the police response in their cases. Potential questions answered will include what the police did in these cases, what victims wanted them to do, how satisfied they were with the response and what the police could do to improve their response. Demographic and situational variables will be explored to see the impact on police response. Ultimately, the goal is to gain knowledge concerning victims' experiences with the police in IPA cases in an effort to improve the response.
