Sex Offender Registration in Southeastern Louisiana and Overpopulation of Prisons

Abstract

Convicted sex offenders are viewed contemptuously by the public and the judicial system and for this their retribution surpasses the completion of their incapacitation sentencing. Laws exist that are more intrusive than any others affecting individuals that have served time by compelling them to register with local law enforcement upon release and advertise their past criminal behavior to their community. Our findings reveal that jail time has a greater impact on the prison population than acknowledged calling for further research in determining the need for sex offender registration reform and its impact on controlling the overpopulation of prisons.
