Trends and Changes Across Twenty Years of Campus Law Enforcement

Abstract

Campus law enforcement has greatly evolved over the past 125 years. From the first recorded campus police department to present day, campus policing has developed in response to the changing needs of institutes of higher education. This study analyzes the expansion and development of campus law enforcement over the past 20 years featuring empirical estimates from the Bureau of Justice Statistics Survey of Campus Law Enforcement Agencies for the years 1995, 2004-2005, and 2011-2012. Campus crime statistics were obtained via Clery Act reporting and associated with agency changes over time. The purpose of this project is to provide a current and retrospective view of campus law enforcement agencies looking at size of departments, diversity, budgets, salary and special interest topics.
