The authors will discuss their experiences in teaching in the Police Studies Certificate program designed for the NYPD sworn personnel in 2001. 15 years after the program’s initial launch, thousands of NYPD sworn officers received their certificates in Leadership in a Multicultural City. The authors, as instructors in this unique certificate, will analyze the leadership concepts and approaches, arguing that leadership training should include a self-selected process that allows for an early identification of the “willing” and thus preparing them for the “ready” aspect of their status within the police organization.
