Findings from the BJS Arrest-related Deaths (ARD) Program 2015 Pilot Study

Abstract

BJS implemented the ARD program 2015 pilot study to assess multiple methodologies for identifying and collecting information about arrest-related deaths. The ARD program pilot uses a hybrid data collection approach combining open source data to identify potential arrest-related deaths and then confirming those cases and collecting additional information directly from law enforcement agencies and medical examiner/ coroner’s offices with concurrent jurisdiction. This presentation will describe the ARD program pilot methodology and examine the number and characteristics of deaths identified from open sources and through official agency reports.
