Reexamining the Relationship between Wars and Homicide

Thu, Nov 17, 7:15 to 8:15pm, Hilton, Grand Ballroom A, 1st Level

Abstract

This study is a replication and extension of Archer & Gartner’s 1976 study “Violent acts and violent times: A comparative approach to postwar homicide rates” published in the American Sociological Review. We extend the data collection and analysis to 2010 and expand on the types of legitimate acts of violence considered. We also employ time series and pooled time series analyses to control for confounding factors. Finally we tie their support for the legitimation of violence theory to other cross-national studies of political violence, political legitimacy, and interpersonal violence.
