Wed, Nov 16, 11:00am to 12:20pm, Hilton, Steering, Riverside Complex

Abstract

In this study we adopt a life course perspective in analyzing the long-term effects of the placement of youths with serious crime and other social problems in youth institutions. The study covers a period from five years before admission to the youth institution to 18 years after admission to the youth institution. We analyze the how former institutionalized youth fair on recorded crime, treatment for mental problems, and recorded addiction and mortality in comparison to a control group. Our results show that institutional stays are often of short duration and have a small effect on our measured outcomes.
