Abstract

This paper presents the initial findings from a systematic review of expert novice differences in terrorism. As the topic is under-researched within terrorism studies the review also incorporates the analysis of expert novice differences in criminal and military activity. These two areas have been chosen, due to their similarities to terrorist activity, so as to analyse what lessons can be learned from the existing literature in these areas. This is complimented by the analysis of expert-novice differences in sport. This has been chosen so as to demonstrate the utility of a broader understanding of expert-novice differences in order to develop our critical analysis of expert novice differences in terrorist activity. This is developing on the work Williams and others who propose that the evidence-based approach in sports psychology can assist in the development and understanding of elite service personnel.
