Examining Relationships Among Crime Analysis Integration, Evidence-based Practice and Accountability in Police Agencies

Abstract

Using data derived from a 2008 PERF survey of over 1,000 agencies nationwide, this paper presents key findings about the integration of crime analysis into police department operations. Foremost, the relationship between crime analysis integration, as outlined in Stratified Policing, and the agency's commitment to using evidence-based approaches (e.g., community-oriented policing, problem-oriented policing, and hot spots policing) is examined along with measures of agency productivity and accountability at different ranks. The analysis seeks to determine whether agencies that say they are committed to evidence-based strategies actually use them in practice. The results are presented along with a discussion of how future research can delve deeper into this question by improving upon self-report surveys by police agencies.
