Examining Gender Disparities and Sentencing Outcomes in U.S. Federal Courts: A Multilevel Analysis

Sat, Nov 19, 11:00am to 12:20pm, Hilton, Grand Salon 18, 1st Level

Abstract

This study addresses gender disparities in sentencing decisions. Prior research has suggested that women are sentenced more leniently than males due to various factors. Using data from the United States Sentencing Commission these effects are explored in southern U.S. federal courts. Moving beyond individual characteristics, contextual effects are analyzed to expand the existing sentencing literature. The results from this analysis will be discussed during the presentation.
